WETH Stolen From Bill Murray’s Ethereum Wallet

A charity NFT collection of Bill Murray was released recently. After the auction, the Ethereum wallet to which the funds were transferred was hacked.

As a result, 110 Wrapped Ethereum (WETH) worth approximately $174,000 was stolen from the crypto wallet. The funds came after an auction held on Coinbase NFT. All funds raised were for charitable purposes.

Gavin Gillas, official at Project Venkman, the blockchain startup Murray is a partner in, said that a transaction was noticed that caused 108.03 WETH to be taken from the wallet, followed by another 1.73 WETH.

The wallet contained another 800 Ethereum NFTs, including Murray’s artwork by CryptoPunks, VeeFriends, and Damien Hirst. But none of these NFTs were stolen. However, as a precaution, these NFTs were all transferred to another wallet.

Gillas, CEO of Murray-sponsored entertainment site The Chive, said a police report was filed after the incident and was quickly contacted by blockchain security firm Chainalysis. In addition, the Coinbase NFT platform was also contacted.

It is unclear how the wallet was exploited. Often in such cases, wallet holders sign a transaction that they believe is a legitimate purpose and unwittingly authorize attackers to transact. However, Gillas believes the situation could have been different.
