Edward Snowden, a former NSA whistleblower, shared his hopes that artificial intelligence could surpass human intelligence and benefit humanity, despite fears that the technology could be hijacked by malicious actors.
Snowden said AI models can exceed humans’ abilities, but for that to happen, they must stop teaching them to think like humans and “let them get better”. Virtually attending the 2023 Consensus conference from Russia, Snowden shared his cautiously optimistic views on the future of AI technology, which has become mainstream after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Snowden reiterated from time to time warnings from some experts that AI technologies can empower bad actors, but he also evaluated positive use cases of emerging technology. He argued that AI models could thwart government surveillance instead of feeding invasive intelligence programs, and said, “Maybe they can stop spying on the public and start spying for the public.” He stated that he believed such a situation would be a net gain.
