Paul Grewal, chief legal officer of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, said the exchange’s newsletter “does not provide the full picture of the meme’s history.”

Coinbase’s chief legal officer recently apologized in a newsletter for mentioning that some groups view Pepe the Frog as a symbol of hatred for extremist groups.

Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal said in a tweet:

“We messed up and we’re sorry. Yesterday we shared the PEPE memecoin overview to provide a factual picture of a trending topic.

The event was blasted by the community born of Pepe memecoin’s newfound popularity. The crypto token, inspired by the cartoon Pepe the Frog, surpassed $1 billion in market cap for the first time this month.
