MetaDAO Hires Futarchy’s Creator Robin Hanson as Advisor

MetaDAO’s Innovative Governance Revolution

MetaDAO is setting the stage for a transformative approach to governance by embracing market-based decision-making. This initiative has received a significant boost with the recent hiring of Robin Hanson, a renowned economics professor at George Mason University and the original architect of the concept known as futarchy, a term he coined nearly 25 years ago. His involvement not only provides intellectual credibility but also enhances the visibility of this year-old project, which has attracted a dedicated community of Solana crypto-governance enthusiasts.

At its core, futarchy operates on the belief that markets are more adept at determining optimal outcomes than traditional political mechanisms, including elected officials and their constituents. In contrast to conventional governance systems, which often resemble a ballot box, futarchical frameworks function more like prediction markets.

To illustrate how this works, consider how MetaDAO tackled the question, “Should MetaDAO hire Robin Hanson as an advisor?” The project initiated markets where traders could speculate on the value of META tokens depending on whether Hanson was hired or not. The decision to bring him on board was largely influenced by traders pushing the price of META upward in the scenario where he was included in the team, signifying that his expertise would be more advantageous than his absence. Ultimately, the decision was deemed worth the investment of 20.9 META tokens, equivalent to approximately $24,000, which he will receive over the next two years.

However, Hanson’s motivation transcends financial gain; he is driven by the pursuit of “glory”. He developed the concept of futarchy out of a conviction that traditional governance is fundamentally flawed. Both he and MetaDAO believe that markets incentivizing individuals to make informed decisions can yield better results than conventional political systems. As Hanson puts it, “If we could actually have a better governance mechanism, we could change the world.”

The pseudonymous co-founder of MetaDAO, known as Proph3t, has engaged in discussions with Hanson about the design of their initiative for over a year. Proph3t formally presented the idea of hiring Hanson to the MetaDAO team earlier this week. According to the proposal, Hanson’s role will focus on mechanism design and strategic guidance. He may also collaborate with MetaDAO to co-author blog posts on innovative futarchical mechanisms.

MetaDAO made its debut at last year’s Solana hacker house, mtnDAO, held in Salt Lake City. The project quickly gained traction among crypto builders who paused their own work to actively participate in its decision markets. Since then, MetaDAO’s governance markets have been embraced by a growing number of projects within the Solana ecosystem, including notable names like Jito.

While MetaDAO isn’t the only project exploring futarchy, Hanson acknowledges that it is the most advanced public initiative in this space. The crypto community, in particular, is receptive to the idea of futarchy, as it resonates with the narratives they construct to rationalize their financial successes. As Hanson states, “When people make money in the world, they need to tell themselves a story about why they made the money. Crypto people tell themselves it’s their insight into potential innovation and changing the world.”
