Tether’s Potential Move Towards a U.S.-Specific Stablecoin
Tether, the issuer behind the world’s largest stablecoin, USDT, is reportedly considering the development of a new token tailored specifically for the United States. This information was highlighted in a recent report by the Financial Times on Monday.
In an interview, Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, revealed that the company has been actively engaged in discussions regarding potential U.S. regulations governing stablecoins. Depending on the outcome of these discussions, Tether might launch a token exclusively for the U.S. market. Ardoino noted that if new regulations are introduced that enhance the competitiveness of U.S. stablecoins, Tether could indeed have an interest in creating a domestic stablecoin, which he described as “basically a settlement currency.”
Furthermore, Ardoino mentioned that the Trump administration recognizes the significance of stablecoins, viewing them as “an important instrument in the United States.” This acknowledgment comes at a time when stablecoins, which are digital tokens pegged to the value of traditional financial assets—most notably the U.S. dollar—are gaining increasing attention in the financial landscape.
The regulations being contemplated by President Donald Trump’s administration may include mandates that require foreign issuers trading cryptocurrencies to adhere to U.S. laws. This development could have far-reaching implications for the cryptocurrency market and its participants.
As of now, Tether has not provided a response to CoinDesk’s request for further comments on this matter.
