EU technology chief Margrethe Vestager said that if the EU and the US take a leadership role, they will be able to create rules that everyone is comfortable with to ensure that AI development can move forward more confidently. She stated that the discussions on this issue should progress rapidly in a few months and that the industry should be included in the process and gain the trust of the society.

The tech chief also said lawmakers should agree on the details and take a comprehensive approach rather than general wording. Meanwhile, the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Law is still being finalized by members of the European Parliament. The latest draft of the legislation includes a ban on the public use of biometric surveillance and predictive policing tools, and stipulates that AI tools should be classified according to their risk level.

Responding to the EU’s concerns that over-regulation could harm the artificial intelligence industry, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, issued a warning to EU lawmakers on May 25.
