Bank of America CEO Says Bank Will Likely Launch Its Own Stablecoin

Bank of America Poised to Enter the Stablecoin Market

Bank of America, a major player in the financial industry that has previously taken a conservative stance on cryptocurrencies, is gearing up to launch its own dollar-backed stablecoin, contingent upon favorable legislation from U.S. lawmakers. Brian Moynihan, the bank’s CEO, expressed this readiness during an interview with David Rubenstein at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

“If they make that legal, we will go into that business,” Moynihan stated, highlighting the bank’s potential shift in strategy. He firmly believes that a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin is inevitable, as these digital assets effectively operate similarly to traditional money market funds or bank accounts. This development hinges on Congress passing the necessary legislation, with discussions suggesting that lawmakers and the White House’s Crypto and AI Czar, David Sacks, aim for action within the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Moynihan elaborated, “It’s pretty clear there’s going to be a stablecoin that is fully dollar-backed. […] We would be able to offer a Bank of America coin alongside U.S. Dollar deposits, allowing for smooth transactions between the two. Currently, we are unable to engage in this practice, but it operates much like dealing with another foreign currency.”

In contrast to competitors like J.P. Morgan and Citigroup, who have made significant strides in the crypto realm, Bank of America has maintained a cautious approach. However, changing regulations could compel the bank to adopt a more proactive stance. The Trump Administration has signaled its commitment to supporting advancements in the cryptocurrency sector by providing clearer regulatory frameworks, which may intensify competition among Wall Street banks in this emerging field. Notably, Charles Schwab, another financial institution that had previously been hesitant, has recently appointed a head of digital assets as it explores opportunities in the cryptocurrency space.

The stablecoin economy has garnered bipartisan support, simplifying the legislative process compared to other areas of cryptocurrency regulation. A group of lawmakers recently pledged to expedite the passage of stablecoin legislation within the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency. While Democrats have raised concerns about the potential for stablecoins to facilitate illicit activities, the Republican majority in Congress suggests a likely favorable approach to the regulation of digital assets. Nevertheless, any proposed legislation will probably require some level of bipartisan cooperation to be successful.

The stablecoin sector has already emerged as a significant force in the payments landscape, with stablecoins facilitating over $33 trillion in transaction volume over the past year. This figure notably surpasses the combined transaction volumes of major credit card companies Visa and Mastercard, underscoring the growing importance of stablecoins in modern financial transactions.
