The Current State of Bitcoin Volatility
Bitcoin (BTC), often recognized for its notorious volatility, has recently displayed a remarkable shift in its trading pattern. Since the end of November, Bitcoin has been confined to a narrow trading range, oscillating between $91,000 and $109,000. This significant compression in volatility marks a striking contrast to the typical behavior of this digital asset.
According to data sourced from Glassnode, the two-week realized volatility—an indicator that reflects how turbulent the asset has been over the past fortnight—has plummeted to an annualized rate of 32%. This is one of the lowest readings observed in recent years. Additionally, the options market has indicated a decline in one-month implied volatility, now falling below an annualized 50%, again reflecting one of the most subdued levels in years.
To provide further context on Bitcoin’s recent sideways consolidation, analyst Checkmate has introduced the concept of the “Choppiness Index.” This metric indicates that Bitcoin’s choppiness, assessed on a weekly timeframe, has reached its highest levels since 2015. Such a finding underscores the extraordinary tightness of the current trading range.
Both implied and realized volatility, as highlighted by Glassnode, tend to exhibit a mean-reverting behavior. This implies that an unusually stable market often sets the stage for a substantial price movement in either direction. In essence, the longer and more restricted the consolidation phase persists, the more explosive the eventual volatility surge is likely to be.
