Developing Countries Curious About Issuing CBDC

Working towards a better understanding of some of the innovative use cases, identification of business models, technological, legal and regulatory aspects that can be supported by the issuance of a CBDC. Many countries are also actively working on CBDC programs. However, the opinion of the citizens on this issue is not clear.

CBDC Looks Attractive for Developing Countries

Only a quarter of Australians support the issuance of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Only 5 percent of Australians surveyed “strongly” support such an initiative. The lowest CBDC support is given in Japan. Only 3 percent of citizens approve of this initiative.

Support for CBDC issuance appears to be significantly higher in emerging markets. For example, 61 percent of Colombians want their government to issue a CBDC.

The resulting inequality may be due to the limited access of people in developing countries to traditional banking services. That’s why many see CBDCs as a tool to encourage financial inclusion.
