Epic Games and NASA Collaborate for the Metaverse Project

NASA recently announced that it has partnered with Epic Games for its metaverse project. According to the agreement, users will be given experiences on Mars using virtual reality.

For this project, an agreement was reached with the HeroX platform, which provides crowdsourced solutions to organizations. The platform aims to contribute to a Virtual Reality (XR) test environment that shows the experiences and situations that astronauts may encounter on Mars. HeroX launched a crowdsourced competition called the NASA MarsXR Challenge.

NASA With the NASA MarsXR Challenge, NASA is looking for five different styles for this experience. There will be 20 separate prizes, 4 for each category, and a total prize pool of $7,000. The overall winner for each category will receive $6,000. Those who take part in the challenge will have 80 days to enter the challenge.

The developers will develop an end-to-end Mars simulation. This simulation is called the MarsXR environment, MarsXR will include a universe with over 400 km2 of Martian terrain, day/night cycles, realistic weather, simulated Martian gravity and spacesuit entities. Developers can then add to these assets or use the existing ones to create their own custom experiences.
