Ethereum was unaffected by the AWS failure that affected the world’s largest companies such as Burger King, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) was temporarily unavailable on Tuesday. The outage did not affect Ethereum (ETH) network nodes, which are mostly hosted on AWS. AWS first announced at 12:08 that it has started an investigation into increased error rates and latency. The company later rolled out 10 more updates, and the latest update confirmed that the issue persisted from 11:49 to 15:37.
The last update provided detailed information stating that multiple AWS Services were experiencing issues in the US. According to AWS, the outage caused problems directly to customers via API Gateway and indirectly through other AWS services. The update also noted that customer issues include experiencing login or authentication errors with the AWS Management Console or Cognito service. It was also stated that customers may have had problems contacting AWS Support via chat or call.
AWS resolved the issue at 1:41 PM and started processing backlog requests. At 3:37 PM AWS completed the backlog and confirmed that all processes are working properly.
Ethereum supporter Evan Van Ness shared the AWS outage on Twitter, confirming that “Ethereum remains unaffected.” While the outage affected the Associated Press and a few other mainstream news outlets, not all AWS-based services suffered. The AWS update stated that the issue affects services in the “US-EAST-1-Region”.
According to Ethernodes information, Amazon hosts 64.4% of Ethereum nodes while Google Cloud only hosts 5.2%. However, it probably wasn’t strong enough for the outage to affect Ethereum as only one AWS region was affected.
The recent outage could rekindle discussions about the centralization of Ethereum. Ethereum has been criticized for its association with the Infura infrastructure, which is responsible for network nodes used by organizations. Many organizations mostly use AWS for hosting.
Big companies affected by the outage
Many companies were affected by the outage. While it’s impossible to cite AWS or the number of companies that were recently affected, large fast-food companies have had to suspend some services, according to reports. According to TheVerge report, Burger King, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell have had to halt app orders until the issue is resolved.
Alongside fast food companies, engineers from Hacker News and Reddit also reported that their troubleshooting consoles were unavailable. According to the report, Delta Air Lines was also affected.
The 2021 AWS outage had more serious effects than the last outage. The issue affected many services including Amazon.com, Amazon Music and access to Alexa. Security cameras like Wyze and Ring also recorded the interruption. There was also a list that ranged from streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus to reports from Venmo, Cash App, Coinbase, and Tinder.
