Final Fantasy 14’s Director Doesn’t Think Metaverse Is ‘Fun’

Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida doesn’t think the metaverse is “fun”.

In an interview with Weekly Bunshun, Yoshida moved his work on the MMORPG away from the metaverse.

“For me, I see the Metaverse as ‘a system that replaces reality with a virtual world’. So I don’t think Metaverse has anything in common with entertainment. In the metaverse I’m thinking of, people will be able to use an avatar in virtual reality and go for a stroll or shop in Shinjuku just like in real life. It looks like fun, but there is no fun there.”

When asked if he would consider working on a metaverse project, Yoshida said he would “do something fun within virtual reality rather than a Metaverse itself,” but said he has no such plans at the moment.

While not a precise definition of the Metaverse, Yoshida’s comments have taken an intriguing turn, suggesting that many may come out of Final Fantasy 14 as a kind of Metaverse – players experiencing a virtual world through avatars.

Last month, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda stated that he believes the future of gaming lies in blockchain technology.
