MARA Holdings Expands Renewable Energy Footprint with Texas Wind Farm Acquisition
The second-largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin, MARA Holdings (MARA), has officially announced the successful acquisition of a wind farm located in Texas. This strategic move adds an impressive 114 megawatts of nameplate wind capacity to its energy portfolio, alongside an additional 240 megawatts of interconnection capacity.
Based in Florida, MARA Holdings plans to leverage the newly acquired wind farm to power its bitcoin mining operations. The company will utilize advanced ASIC mining hardware, which might have otherwise faced obsolescence or been sold in the secondary market. By repurposing these machines and harnessing renewable energy, MARA aims to significantly reduce the costs associated with bitcoin mining while maximizing the use of wind energy that would have otherwise gone untapped.
In a statement regarding the acquisition, CEO Fred Thiel emphasized the importance of integrating renewable energy sources into their operations, stating, “With this added renewable energy asset, MARA now owns and operates 136 megawatts of generating capacity.” This development not only showcases MARA’s commitment to sustainability but also reinforces its position as a leader in the cryptocurrency mining sector.
As it stands, MARA Holdings is recognized as the second-largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin, boasting a substantial portfolio of 45,659 BTC on its balance sheet.
