Legendary performance artist Marina Abramović steps into the industry with The Hero’s NFT.
Arts platform CIRCA will release a collection of unpublished material from Abramović’s The Hero (2001), which it will present via the Tezos blockchain (a more energy-efficient alternative to other blockchains) from July 2022. The distribution of NFTs extracted from this unused material will be single frames as .JPG or multiple frames as .GIF. But even more remarkable is CIRCA’s project to present the work on international video billboards and to deliver the stunning work to audiences around the world.
Abramović’s The Hero is a video-based performance piece inspired by their parents’ first meeting story. During World War II, his father was fighting on the front lines and his mother was providing them with medical aid. Her mother later fell victim to typhus and was unconsciously injured in the woods, until her father eventually discovered her. He moved her to a nearby village to heal.
His creation of The Hero as NFT came as a surprise, although Abramović has previously stated that he doesn’t see anything of value in the NFT’ environment at the moment, and underscored the over-focused focus on monetary value within its community.
