Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings with New Purchase
Metaplanet (3350) has announced a significant acquisition of an additional 269.43 bitcoin (BTC), further solidifying its status as a leading corporate stakeholder in the cryptocurrency market. This latest investment, valued at approximately 4 billion yen ($26.4 million), brings the Tokyo-based company’s total Bitcoin reserves to 2,031.41 BTC.
This strategic purchase is part of Metaplanet’s ongoing Bitcoin Treasury Operations, which commenced in April 2024. To date, the company has invested an impressive 24.9 billion yen at an average acquisition price of 12.2 million yen per Bitcoin, as detailed in a recent document posted on its official website.
With this move, Metaplanet aims to enhance its Bitcoin yield—a metric that reflects the change in the ratio of BTC holdings relative to shares outstanding. Notably, the company achieved a remarkable yield of nearly 310% in the fourth quarter, while its current yield for the first quarter stands at 15.3%.
The latest purchase follows a successful fundraising initiative last month, during which Metaplanet raised $745 million through the issuance of 21 million shares. This bitcoin acquisition strategy mirrors the approach taken by corporate trailblazers such as MicroStrategy and is gaining traction within Japan’s financial sector. Just last week, energy company Remixpoint revealed it invested 9 billion yen in Bitcoin over the previous year.
As it stands, Metaplanet now boasts the 16th-largest Bitcoin reserve among publicly traded companies, as reported by Bitcoin Treasuries. Following this announcement, Metaplanet’s shares experienced a rise of 2.2%, reaching 6,040 yen on Monday.
