Creators join Arweave
In their efforts to continue bypassing censorship, other creators have previously He turned to Arweave to back up podcasts and posts made on Weibo. A Chinese publisher is using Blockchain technology to permanently store articles written by 100,000 authors. Similarly, LikeCoin has a simple WordPress plugin to protect content. Ko’s technology had previously been used by Hong Kong residents who were desperate to preserve archived content from Hong Kong Radio Television. This move comes after the publisher announced that it will begin deleting content older than a year. In 2019, video footage of the attack on a group of protesters caused the public’s trust in law enforcement to drop sharply, making video content politically charged and likely to be deleted. As a result, protection has become crucial in using Ko’s emerging technology.
The key to protecting multiple storage locations
According to MIT expert Neha Narula at the Digital Currency Initiative, the best way to protect content is to create redundancy. “so that if someone wants to remove it, it has to go to all the people hosting these duplicates,” he says. LikeCoin uses Arweave to store the media file in multiple places, making the content harder to censor, but easy to find using the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS).
