Alexey Pertsev Set to Be Released as Appeal Preparations Begin
In a recent announcement via a post on X, Alexey Pertsev, the Tornado Cash developer who was convicted of money laundering in 2024, revealed that he is scheduled to be released from prison on Friday. This release is to facilitate preparations for his upcoming appeal.
The 31-year-old Russian national received a sentence of 64 months in a Dutch prison last May. The indictment against Pertsev highlighted his “habit of committing money laundering” and suggested that he should have been aware of the illicit transactions occurring on the Tornado Cash platform.
Tornado Cash is a coin-mixing protocol designed to enhance privacy for its users by allowing them to send tokens to another wallet anonymously. It operates by pooling funds and shuffling them, effectively obscuring the origin of the transactions.
Notably, the U.S. government has imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash, alleging that the platform has been exploited by the notorious North Korean hackers known as the Lazarus Group.
