In a statement to the DOJ, Alexey Bilyuchenko and Aleksandr Verner’s Deputy Attorney General Kenneth Polite said in a statement:

“Beginning in 2011, Bilyuchenko and Verner stole a large amount of cryptocurrency from MtGox and contributed to the eventual bankruptcy of the exchange. Armed with ill-gotten gains from MtGox, Bilyuchenko allegedly helped establish the notorious BTC-e virtual currency exchange that laundered money for cybercriminals around the world.”
