What is Crystal Palace FK?
Crystal Palace Football Club, commonly referred to as Palace, is a professional football club based in Selhurst in the Borough of Croydon in South London, England, and plays in the Premier League, the highest level of English football. Although officially established as a professional team in 1905, the club’s origins can be traced back to 1861, when an amateur Crystal Palace football team was formed in the CPFC Exhibition building. This has led to the club’s claims that Crystal Palace should be recognized as the world’s oldest professional football club. These claims have been strengthened, especially after historians discovered a lineage through the Crystal Palace Company. Both amateur and professional clubs played on the grounds of the palace, using the FA Cup Final stadium for their home matches until 1915, when they were forced to leave due to the outbreak of the First World War.
The amateur club became one of the original founding members of the Football Association in 1863 and competed in the first FA Cup competition in 1871-72. They then reached the semi-finals where they lost to the Royal Engineers. They played in the FA Cup for the next four seasons but disappeared from the historical record after their game against Barnes FC on 18 December 1875. Shortly after Crystal Palace existed as a professional club in 1905, it applied for selection to the Football League but was rejected and played in the Southern League instead. Palace eventually joined the Football League in 1920 and generally spent most of their league history competing in the two best tiers of English football.
