Andreas M. Antonopoulos is a British-Greek Bitcoin advocate, tech entrepreneur, and author. He was born in London in 1972.
Antonopoulos was born in London, United Kingdom in 1972 and moved to Athens, Greece during the Greek Junta. He spent his childhood there and returned to England at the age of 17. Andreas Antonopoulos holds a degree in Computer science and Data Communications, Networks and Distributed Systems from University College London.
He served as Senior Vice President and Co-Founder at Nemertes Research from 2003 to 2011. While there, Antonopoulos researched computer security and noted that the biggest threat to computer security is overly sophisticated systems, not seasoned hackers.
In 2012, Andreas Antonopoulos fell in love with Bitcoin. He eventually quit his job as a freelance consultant and started talking about bitcoin at conferences, consulting for startups, and writing free articles.
In January 2014, Antonopoulos joined Blockchain.info as chief security officer. He left his NGO role in September 2014.
In April 2014, Andreas Antonopoulos organized a fundraising campaign for Dorian Nakamoto, who was identified in a Newsweek article as Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. The reporting techniques used in the article were controversial among journalists and members of the Bitcoin community. The fundraising event, aimed at helping Nakamoto after the attention it received as a result of the article, raised 50 Bitcoins worth $23,000 at the time.
On October 8, 2014, Antonopoulos spoke before the Banking, Commerce and Commerce committee of the Canadian Senate to address senators’ questions about how to regulate Bitcoin in Canada.
In March 2016, the first edition of Mastering Bitcoin was released in print and online by Antonopoulos, followed by a second edition in June 2017.
In December 2017, after Roger Ver made a public post on Twitter on December 5 questioning his investment choices given Andreas Antonopoulos’ “pronounced” public talk about Bitcoin since 2012, he told Antonopoulos more than a thousand of his work. Unsolicited donations of more than 100 Bitcoins have been sent by his followers.
