Who is Hester Peirce?

Hester Maria Peirce is an American lawyer and US Securities and Stock Exchange Commission (SEC), nicknamed “Crypto Mom” because of his supportive stance to the crypto currency sector.

Peirce’s work in the SEC focused on advocating for clearer arrangements, especially in the field of crypto.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Peirce was born in Ohio. He completed his undergraduate education in the field of economics at Case Western Reserve University and graduated in 1993. Following his passion for law and economy, Peirce received the degree of Legal Doctor (JD) from Yale Faculty of Law in 1997.

  • Peirce’s professional journey began as a clerk for Judge Roger Andewelt at the Federal Court of Allegations (1997-1998).
  • Washington, where he worked as a joint partner from 1998 to 2000, joined the Cutler & Pickering law company in DC, Cutler & Pickering.
  • The career path took him to the Stock Exchange Commission; Here he first served as a personnel lawyer in the Department of Investment (2000-2004) and then as the Advisor of Commissioner Paul S. Atkins (2004-2008). Following the 2008 crisis, he focused on the financial regulation reform and the control of the regulatory practice of the Dodd-Frank Law.
  • Between 2012 and 2017, he worked as a Senior Research Assistant and Director of Financial Markets Working Group at George Mason University Mercatus Center.
  • He was appointed by US President Donald Trump to the US Securities and Stock Exchange Commission (SEC) and on January 11, 2018.

Peirce’s first nomination for SEC came to fill a republican chair during the administration of former US President Barack Obama. Despite the approval of the Senate Banking Committee, he did not vote for the entire Senate nomination. Although this candidacy paused, Trump was re -nominated and approved in 2017.

During his term of office, Peirce became a loyal advocate of the crypto currency sector and strived for regulatory clarity and innovation -friendly policies. The current term of office, which started in 2020, ends in June 2025.

One day after Trump’s presidency (21 January 2025), the SEC announced that it has established a new crypto task force aimed at creating a regulatory frame for crypto beings. Mission force led by the Commission Member Peirce; The Congress will develop regulations that support innovation, strengthen market integrity and protect investors by cooperating with the Commodity Futures Commission (CFTC) and other stakeholders. This move shows that SEC has experienced significant change in crypto arrangements under the Trump administration.
